Architects Discuss Expanding Jail with More Cells

Posted: Updated:

Voters may be seeing an additional measure on the ballot this fall with regards to our jail expansion.

Today, architects for the Ward County administration building and jail expansion met with county commissioners on the progress of the project.

It was determined that the jail needs 100 new cells rather than 50.

Also, the Ward County Sheriffs Department would be moved to the basement of the jail addition. But, this would need the voters' approval, meaning a measure on the ballot in November.

"Expansion from 50 cells to 100 cells gives the sheriff a lot more opportunity to classify inmates, " says Mark Ludgatis the detention architect for BWBR. "This means that you get inmates that are incompatible with each other away from each other."

"Numerous fights between male inmates, between female inmates have broke out. I've had four corrections officers quit this month," says Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski. "It's just extremely stressful for the entire staff to keep up all the schedules, the court schedules of the inmates, and just, the overcrowding that we have."

The measure would pertain to an increase in estimates, but not an increase in sales tax or the time of the project.

A potential public hearing regarding the measure would happen sometime in September.
