Williston Holds Relay for Life Event

Posted: Updated:

The 17th annual Relay for Life is going on tonight.

Earlier this week, the Relay for Life staff found out they had to move the event from Cutting Field to the Western Star Complex. Now, with the location set, everybody is getting ready for the relay.

“We are setting up all the luminary bags we're getting camp sites set up. People will be setting up their camp sites all day long," says Christi Allen of the Put the Cuffs on Cancer team.

“In this bag, it contains a piece of wood and a candle, and  around 10 o clock, all the candles will be lit, which signifies the hope for a cure.”

So far, more than $200,000 has been raised. Many cancer survivors participate to raise money to help others battling cancer.

“All the people that didn't make it. My grandmas a survivor. My father in laws a survivor," says Desri Linghor.

“I just had friends that were afflicted with cancer and thought it was necessary.” says Linda Schilke who is on the Praying for a Cure Team. “And then two years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer so then it's just a reason to stay with it.”

There are 43 teams also participating in the relay. They have their own booths where they sell food and have games for people to play. Some even decorated their booths to show they are ready to fight cancer.

“You don't sit down,” says Lori Foldesi, who is a 10-year cancer survivor. “You just keep moving and if you’re not walking you find something else to do. You play the games. There's always something to do, so we just get together with the other people and have fun.”

Allen says at around 10:45 there will be a fireworks show for anybody who wants to go watch.
