Menoken Begins Construction on New School

Posted: Updated:

Menoken celebrated the groundbreaking for a new elementary school yesterday. It's right next to the old one, which has served the community for years.

"Really good memories the last eight years. But really excited for the new building," says Menoken teacher Mandy Zabel.

"I'm just excited, because I have only been to one school," says fifth-grader Jean Anderson.

Some say they'll miss it.

"But also think it'll be a little bit sad, that they're going to tear down this old building," says Anderson.

The community says the building has served it's purpose for many years. But now, it's time to move in a different direction.

"The new Menoken School will be much more energy efficient and give our students a better learning environment," says school board President Patrick Richter.

Designed with more than 7,000 square feet, with classrooms closer together, a large multipurpose room and handicap accessible parking.

"I love the community out here. I love how close our kids are. I have these students sometimes for two, three, four years or a time. So, they get to be a part of our family," says Zabel.

The school board, parents, teachers and students say they're excited for the next several months because this new building has been a long time coming.

The new Menoken Elementary is scheduled to open in February.
