Medora Musical Day Jobs

Posted: Updated:
The Burning Hills Singers are the marquee attraction at the Medora Musical. But not many people know that the talented performers they see on stage also work behind the scenes doing less glamorous jobs during the summer.

Kevin Korczynski has been answering phones at the Medora call center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every week day for the past four summers.

"Talking all day can grow tiring, just being on the phone consistently, answering the same questions with the same script," says Burning Hills singer Kevin Korczynski.

But it's what Kevin does at night that comes as a surprise to each Medora out-of-towner.

"I'll read the guests on the phone, and if they're being friendly and personable then I'll chat with them about the musical too. And I say 'I'm actually in it, come say hi,'" says Korczynski.

The next time the caller hears his voice, it's belting out ballads on stage at North Dakota's sparkling summer spectacle: the Medora Musical.

"Many times the performers who are on stage also choose to have a job during the day that's separate from their role in the show," says  Kinley Slauter the amphitheater manager.

In fact, more than half of this choral company works around town during the day doing other job like retail sales, groundskeeping and the pitchfork fondue.

"Typically, people don't even recognize me when they see the show mostly because I'm not wearing makeup," says Burning Hills Singer Carolyn Schmitz.

These secret superstars say that while their day jobs are enjoyable and earn a little extra cash, it's performing for thousands that keeps them coming back summer after summer.

"The musical's my passion that's my job, that's why I'm here. It's always a rush and it's always different," says Korczynski.

And when audience members realize that the same people who sold them their tickets are also the stars of the show it strikes an even bigger chord.

Pros on the phone, or stars on the stage, they never miss a beat.

More and more people are seeing the Burning Hills singers doing odd jobs and singing on stage. Attendance for the Medora Musical is up 14 percent this year.
