Minot Man Faces Charges for Online Sex Crimes

Posted: Updated:
The Minot man charged with terrorizing, luring minors and promoting obscenity online was in court today.

Nicholas Thiel used a fake Facebook account under the name Brandon Heirs to contact girls ages 12 through 17.

Thiel exchanged obscene photos with the girls, including sending pictures of his genitals to them. He also promoted sexual acts online, and threatened to rape one of the girls he was chatting with.

Fourteen of the 17 charges will go to a trial pending a pre-trial on Aug. 13. Three of the counts were dismissed since the state could not prove that Thiel was aware of the ages of some of the girls he contacted. Thiel pleaded not guilty to the charges.

If convicted, Thiel could face up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. He is currently being held in the Ward County Jail.
