Teachers Attend Indian Education Summit

Posted: Updated:
Respected teachers like Tom Red Bird, a Lakota Language Instructor at Sitting Bull College, say any meeting where educators and government leaders can talk is innovation.

"Surrounding states: South Dakota, Montana, they all have Indian Education Summits. And so one thing that I wanted to do in my position is to make sure that we do have an Indian Education Summit in North Dakota," says DPI Indian Education Director.

Fredricks says she was happy to have renowned speakers  come and inspire teachers. Juneau and Baesler held a news conference during the summit to talk on a new program called "Indian Education for All".

"It's integrated. So it's not an additional responsibility but it's immersed in all of our basic classes of physical education, of english, of math, of science," says North Dakota State Superintendent, Kristen Baesler.

As state superintendent of Montana public schools, Denise Juneau says as an example,  her students are able to learn about  Native American authors during english class. Having found a clause in the state constitution that supports the program, the state helped fund the implementation.

"Provides funding to school districts to help them implement Indian Education for all, and provides the state with financial resources aw well," says Juneau. "So that we can develop."

Summit attendees say the break out sessions on keeping Native American students in school, erasing the drop out rate, and increasing the graduation rate are a great start, but there's still more work to be done.
