DOT Announces New Rail Rules

Posted: Updated:
The Department of Transportation secretary discussed the state's Bakken crude oil as higher in volatility than other oil when announcing new rules for transporting oil by rail.

Fifty-nine percent of the oil produced in the state during the month of may traveled to market by rail car and the North Dakota Petroleum Council disagrees that the state's oil is more hazardous.

"We don't understand based on their data why they would continue to say Bakken crude oil is more volatile and more flammable. The data just does not bare that out, and we are disappointed that they aren't following their own science," says Kari Cutting the vice president of the Petroleum Council.

The director for the Department of Mineral Resources says they don't know if the rules will have any impact on North Dakota's oil production, but says that the rail is an important part of shipping crude oil, and will be reviewing the 200 ages of proposed rules.
