St. Alexius Hosts Mobile Mayo Museum

Posted: Updated:

The Mayo Clinic is celebrating 150 years of service and to celebrate a mobile mayo museum is traveling across the country to share the history of the hospital.

From the outside it looks like just another trailer, but as soon as you walk inside you take a step back in time, starting with a tornado in Rochester.

"Which was kind of the inspiration behind the sisters approaching Dr. William Worrall Mayo to start the Mayo clinic there. You then continue through the presentation, and you see the images of the brothers William and Charlie Mayo who continued their fathers work as they created what is today the Mayo clinic," says Alex von Bormann.

The exhibit also shares the stories of patients of the clinic as well as how they have evolved in the care they give and there's even opportunity for people to have some fun.

One of the interactive things people can do while waking through is find out how their skeletal system works.

"You see grown men and women acting like children as they look at the sort of science fiction style nature of some of the work that's being done," says Bormann.

The exhibit was held at St. Alexius, to honor the cooperation the two hospitals have through the Mayo Clinic Network.

"With the click of a button they can reach out to our colleagues at Mayo Clinic and get a second opinion within 48 hours. Really that helps us keep the patients local. They don't have to make the eight to nine hour drive to Rochester. Yet they get all the experience that's held between years of those Mayo clinic specialists," says Dr. Brandon Price of St. Alexius.

Which Price says is an invaluable tool to have at their fingertips.

The next stop for the mobile exhibit will be on Monday in Grand Forks.
