Family Focus: Lost Children

Posted: Updated:
There are only two days left at the fair, and it's likely going to be packed.

Haleigh Rosa spoke with some families who have a plan in case someone in the clan gets lost in the crowd.

They are so quick at this age. You can turn around and you wouldn't know where they are," says grandmother Janice Shores.

With the last weekend of the fair coming up, thousands of people will be making it out for some last minute fun.

That's why it's so important to make sure your family knows what to do if they get separated.

Our plan is if they get lost they go to our friends booth over at the Red Rooster," says mother Steff Knittel.

For those families that haven't come up with a plan, a good starting point is to teach your child the basics.

"What their phone number is, what their parents phone number is, what their parents first names are, are all good things for a child to be able to say when they are lost," says Ward County Sheriff's Patrol Supervisor Nic Boys.

That way if they do get lost, they'll be able to provide good information. And always make sure your child knows that law enforcement is very approachable.

"Whether it's a sheriff or the police, approach them, don't be afraid to ask for help," says Boys.

The sheriff's department can then get all information to the fair base dispatch, which broadcasts a description of lost or separated children through the city watch program.

People wearing state fair badges can also help out in case of an emergency.
