Youth Theatre Performs "The Unprincess in Sidney"

The Footlights and Greasepaint Youth Theatre kicked off their performance of "The Unprincess in Sidney" last Saturday.

The young actors started their preparation for The Unprincess, last Monday. Auditions were on Tuesday with everybody getting a key role.

“Her personality kind of fit mine. I didn't really take very long to get into character," says Allyson Young who plays as Queen Aubrey.

“I auditioned for Queen Aubrey, but then he told me I had to be Mistress Thistle because I am the oldest," says Katrina Meldahl.

On Saturday morning, they were set to perform twice at the Sunrise Festival of the Arts. Their performances were throughout the day and when they weren't performing they were running the Kids Korner.

“I have a younger brother and he likes stuff like this," says Hannah Evans who plays as Thomasina The Tinker. “I think this is a good way for kids to get out, instead of being out in front of a TV all day. I don't think that is really good for the kids. I think they should be up and moving."

These children were moving around a lot to different stations. There was a catapulting game where the kids try to hit a ball inside the castle. Another one was a fishing game where kids try to catch something but get a surprise instead.

“The kids are ages nine through 13 this year, and it's surprising how much they've improved while working on this production. It's really startling what they can do," says Arch Ellwein the director of the theatre.

Ellwein added this camp improves the self confidence of the children and also prepares them to speak in front of a crowd of people.
