Cell Phone Use Increases Dining Times

Posted: Updated:

You've probably heard about distracted driving, but what about distracted dining? More people are using their cell phones while eating out. One server says it makes it more difficult to do her job efficiently.

"As a server, it's rude if I interrupt someone on their phone. But, then it might seem rude to that person that you're not approaching them at the right time," says server Kimberly Moos.

An article on says a busy New York restaurant took to Craigslist after receiving complaints about restaurant wait times. The restaurant compared surveillance videos from 2004 and 2014.

The article says the use of electronic devices increased dining times by about 50 minutes.

While food was delivered in the same amount of time, customers took an additional 13 minutes to order and about 15 minutes more to leave after receiving their check.

"We usually go rotation and seating wise. So, if we don't approach a table right when they come, then we might be at another table and taking another order, and then, they're wondering why it's taking us so long to come," says Moos.

Assistant manager Marisa Creswell says she hasn't noticed extended wait times at the Walrus, but some servers won't approach a table if a customer is on the phone.

"A lot of times, they feel uncomfortable approaching a table if they see that you're on your phone. They don't want to be rude and intrude on whatever it is your doing," says Creswell.

She says distracted dining can also cause people to make mistakes when placing an order.

"To say, 'I don't want a certain item. I don't want tomatoes or I don't want onions.' It could. They may think that they have told you, but they could have been distracted and forgot to."

Longer dining times can also affect a restaurants bottom line, because they can't accommodate as many customers.
