Basin Electric Employees Give Back to the Community

Posted: Updated:
Some employees of Basin Electric cooperative are spending their free time maintaining the new Basin Garden. The new landscape reminds employees why it's important to give back.

"You know we say volunteers can you know take lettuce, tomatoes or whatever but then I'm thinking most of what we harvest is going to go to the Hunger Free North Dakota program," says garden coordinator, Tracie Bettenhausen.

Sheila Renner and Tracie Bettenhausen decided it was a good idea to donate the garden's first harvest of lettuce to local soup kitchen, Heaven's Helpers.

"It's the folks that come in and make a donation that keep this place operating. First you feed the body, you are here to feed the soul," says Heaven's Helpers volunteer, Terry Hansen.

For Renner, getting her hands dirty is nothing compared to putting food on the table for others in need.

"There are others in town that do need our help, so it kinda opened my eyes to that, it felt really good cause they were really appreciative," says garden volunteer, Shiela Renner.

"That's what life is all about helping others whether it be at the soup café or where ever," says Hansen.

From garden to table, the real harvest is the start of a new way to give back.
