Minot Hosts Nicotine Dependence Conference

Posted: Updated:

First District Health Unit received a grant from the North Dakota Department of Health to put on the first Nicotine Dependence Conference for medical providers. Doctors, nurses and health care professionals from all over the state took part in the conference over the past two days at Minot State University.

Richard Hurt of the Mayo Clinic held sessions along with other tobacco treatment specialists. The experts stressed the importance of staying up to date on treatments for different levels of addiction. The role of the recent cigarette trends was also a hot topic today.

“E-cigarettes around the country are kind of like the wild west. They aren't regulated. They haven't been shown to be safe or effective. So, one of the things we'll talk about this afternoon is E-cigarettes and what we can do about them.” Says Richard Hurt, the conference director.

The health care providers who attended will be able to better serve their patients with tobacco addiction by using cutting edge methods and treatments.
