Federal Funding for Veteran Healthcare

Posted: Updated:

More than $375,000 in federal funding are headed to rural areas in North Dakota to improve healthcare access for veterans.

The grant money, which comes from the U.S. Department for Veterans Affairs, will be used to coordinate transportation at 36 facilities throughout the state. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp commented on the struggles that she sees some veterans have in getting the car they need.

"One of the biggest concerns that I receive is the difficulty of transportation. For those veterans who want to seek healthcare in Fargo, we absolutely need to make that transportation system work for them. Many of them no longer can drive. Many of them enjoy the camaraderie of the vans, and so we need to make sure that we have a transportation system that's working for our vets," says Heitkamp.

Sen. Hoeven also commented that it is important to improve healthcare access to vets living in rural areas, and said the grant is an important step.
