Senior Give Back Through Helping Hands

Posted: Updated:

You're never too old to help someone else. That seems to be a theme at the Good Samaritan Center in Bismarck.

The activity director at the assisted living and skilled nursing facility is always looking for ways to serve the community.

Twice a month, people eagerly volunteer to participate in what Good Samaritan calls Give Back Thursdays. Residents help with projects designed to serve the community. On this day, it's donating supplies and making blankets for the kennels at the Humane Society.

"We've done St. Alexius children's ward, the Humane Society, Ruth Meiers, the Advocacy Center and different places like that. We kind of just look for different places in town that have needs that our residents can help with," says Sarah McFarland of the Good Samaritan Society.

And you won't find a grumpy face in the crowd. These folks enjoy each other's company and have fun with whatever they're doing. And physical limitations don't seem to make much of a difference in who participates.

"I do more now than I ever did. They keep us busy. Our activity director is so great. And she says you've got to be busy to stay well and healthy. So, I guess that's true," says resident Evelyn Herring.

They're always looking for something new to help with. On the other hand, they don't mind doing more for the same organizations.
