Career Academy Student Tops Electronic Competition

Posted: Updated:
North Dakota recently took the Skills USA Championship by storm. North Dakota's high schoolers placed in both the top 10 and top five in several. One student came out close to the top, earning the silver medal in Mobile Electronics Installation.

Andrew Beckert, a Bismarck Public School Career Academy graduate, says he's happy that he even got to go.

Hard at work tweaking the wires and making sure all the nuts and bolts are in place, Beckert is a humble winner.

"Wasn't actually expecting to do this well when I went. And just, I'm really happy I placed," says Beckert.

As an alumni of Bismarck Public School's Career Academy, teachers and staff say they're thrilled for him.

"We have a three year electronics program that actually we articulate with Bismarck State College. And somebody like Andrew, is a good example. What he can do now after three years, he goes directly into the second year of Bismarck State College," says teacher Dale Hoerauf.

Beckert says from a young age he's loved working with electronics. In high school he says the career academy allowed him to learn the how to fix his car.

Adding speakers, auxiliary plugs, light switches and a fancy stereo. This talent and passion to work with electronics led him all the way to the top.

"Our state level was a lot harder then nationals was. So, I was kind of relieved when I got to some of the things we had to do. Some of it was just overwhelming," says Beckert.

"To know that our state level competition is at a higher level maybe even then the national is pretty powerful," says Hoerauf.

Showing me the fascists of his car I did remind him that he could get electrocuted, so what keeps him going?

"Just that I love to do it," says Beckert.

Career Academy administrators say they're proud of all the students who attended the competition and that it shows that their skills programs are build it to industry standards.

Andrew Beckert says he's not sure what his next move is. Beckert says he'd like to got to college and get certified, but he'd also like to go straight into the work force.
