Deputies Honored with Life Saving Award

Posted: Updated:

Two Ward County Sheriff's Deputies received a very special award today.

Deputy William Miller and Deputy Ann Millerbernd were both given the Life Saving Award for an accident that happened back in March.

Deputy Miller had noticed a jeep in front of him veer off into the left lane of traffic. The jeep went on to disappear down an embankment. That's when a huge wall of water shot into the air.

Deputy Miller pulled over, and could see the jeep was upside down and under water, so he sprung into action yanking on the car door and opening it enough to see that the rear seat was pushing a man's head under water. The deputy held the seat up so the man could breathe.

When Deputy Millerbernd arrived she got right into the water and tried to cut the man’s seatbelt off with a knife Deputy Miller had handed to her.

The air temperature that day was 29 degrees and the water temperature was 22 degrees.
