Grain Car Delays

Posted: Updated:
There's typically a few delays around harvest time, as railroads work to ship grain and other ag products out of the state, but with a late harvest, long drying times, and tough winter conditions, the state's two major rail providers are still playing a game of catch up.

The Public Service Commission, which works with the rail roads on behalf of grain shippers, sent a survey to 200 of their clients. Of the 66 replies, 90 percent of shippers that use BNSF are waiting for cars, and 50 percent of Canadian Pacific customers are also waiting on rail cars to ship their products.

"And we also asked in our survey do you feel looking ahead and how are you feeling about 2014, and we gave them a range and a vast majority of the shippers who use both Burlington Northern and Canadian Pacific either have low to no confidence in the service they are going to get in 2014," says Julie Fedorchak of the North Dakota Public Service Commission.

The PSC will be meeting with BNSF and Canadian Pacific in August to discuss progress. The commission has the regulative authority to submit claims to the Surface Board of Transportation and other federal agencies if shippers are not receiving the service they need.
