Protect Your Child from Dangerous Car Temperatures

Posted: Updated:

With the weather heating up in North Dakota, remember that it's never okay to leave children in a car.

Even when it doesn't feel that hot outside, kids are at a higher risk for heat related illnesses. Cars can get really hot...really fast. Even just a few minutes alone in a car can be dangerous for a child. On a day that is 72 degrees, the temperature in a car can increase as much as 30 degrees in just 30 minutes. Minot police advise you to alert authorities if you see a child in a hot car.

"Don't hesitate for a second to call the police department or 911. We do respond when we get calls like that. We've got arrangements we can make to unlock the vehicle in a safe manner to get the child out and get a hold of the parent," says Todd Haman the senior officer for the Minot Crime Prevention Unit.

Haman says the cold in the winter is just as dangerous as the summertime heat as far as children are concerned. In any weather conditions, it's best not to leave your child in the car.
