Mission in Afghanistan

Posted: Updated:

A group of more than 40 North Dakota National Guard members are serving a mission in Afghanistan.

Capt. Kayla Gartner, who is based on Camp Phoenix in Kabul, is working in a medical clinic with soldiers from North Dakota and around the world.

They've been treating a variety of ailments, ranging from upper respiratory issues to muscle injuries and broken bones.

Gartner says its been a great experience, and she's enjoyed getting to know the soldiers from other countries.

"They value the same things we do, like the war on terror or the fact that people should be free to govern themselves. They shouldn't have to worry about the Taliban. So, it's nice to see that they feel the same way," she says.

While overseas, she's also had the opportunity to provide medical assistance during a marathon in northern Afghanistan.
