Mission to Latvia

Posted: Updated:

The 116th Public Affairs detachment spent nearly a month in Latvia taking part in a multi-national military exercise.

"They were providing whether it be print articles or video to millions of individuals not only in the Baltic region but throughout the world," said Col. Darcie Handt.

"We were able to work with different countries public affairs officers, different countries soldiers, to go out take photos of them, take videos of them, help them create messages, help create their story and it was just a wonderful experience," said Staff Sgt. Brett Miller.

They also had the task of creating a messaging system that could be used between the different nations.

"The overall mission was to create a sense of stability in the region and for us we're working with NATO, that's exactly what we did," said Miller.

He was one of six from North Dakota who went over for the mission and the work he did earned him special recognition.

"His professionalism earned him an award that he will be presented with later, hopefully here in July from Major General McQueen. He's the deputy commanding general for mobilization and reserve affairs from the United States Army Europe. A very distinguished award for him to receive," said Handt.

"It's wonderful I'm getting the award but I think everyone kind of deserves it as well. We all did a great job, it's not just me, it's a team effort and we were all a cohesive team," said Miller.

The group returned from their mission on June 28th.
