Sylvan Students Try Robotic Program

Posted: Updated:

Toys are a great way to occupy a child's time. Not only are they kept busy, but they can grow their imaginations as well. Teachers at Bismarck Sylvan Learning Center are testing a pilot program called Robotics with LEGO.

Children much younger than I were programming these little Lego robots to move and interact with one another.

Andrew Zeler and his classmates are hard at work building a lego robot, that will move.

"I love the class because it's fun. I love building, like, the alligator and stuff. Then programming it at the end to see it works," says Zeler.

Bismarck's Sylvan branch was asked to try out the program to see if children would take to the idea of Legos as learning tools; building things like animals that can move if programmed correctly.

"It's very, very innovative. It's a fun approach for incorporating STEM. We have the science, technology, the engineering and the math. The kids are absolutely enjoying it," says Tamara Wagner the director for Sylvan.

Teachers say they're right with the kids; this class is the best.

"It's much better then just sitting at a desk. To go over a problem over and over. This is stuff they can bring home. They can talk about it. They can even play with it at home if they want," says student Adam Wohl.

Zeler says his interest in robots came from school and Gateway to Science activities, but it wasn't enough. He says engineering could be in his future and Sylvan is helping him prepare.

"They says the vocab words, and they just tell you more about-like, how the axle works. How the gears will work too. I think this is more my favorite compared to the one we did in school," says Zeler.

Students and teachers say the two-hour class seems to fly by and at the end, it seems no one wants to leave.

Administrators say the robotics class is so popular that Robotics Two will be offered in late July or early August.
