Grid Helps Determine Electrical Needs

Posted: Updated:

From generation, to transmission lines, there is a lot that goes in to keeping your lights on. As the state of North Dakota continues to grow, the need for electricity is predicted to double the need for electricity providers.

The North Dakota Public Service Commission sets the rates for electricity providers, and permits the routes for transmission lines. Last week, the commission started an investigation on provider Xcel energy after three recent power outages in Fargo.

"The commission has direct authority over MDU, Ottertail and Xcel Energy the regulated utilities to make sure they have enough generation and transmission to meet their customers needs. We look at how reliable is the power? The grid has become more and more reliable every year, but it's still not 100 percent. And it's never going to be 100 percent," says Brian Kalk of the PSC.

Kalk says looping transmission lines help to safe guard the grid from natural disasters and other outage situations.
