Flaring Rules Affect Production

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota's new rules to reduce flaring will hit oil companies with production reductions in order to meet gas capture goals.

But some say the rules don't go far enough. Currently, the state flares about 30 percent of the natural gas produced. And the production levels in the Bakken and Three Forks formation are only going to increase.

"Even if after six years which is the life of this policy, and they're hoping to get it down to 10 percent, hopefully five percent, that's still five or 10 times the national average which across the U.S. one percent of the gas is flared," says Wayde Schafer of the Sierra Club.

The statistic you just heard on the flaring of natural gas levels in the United States is from a report by the National Department of Energy.
