Centennial Celebrates Watford City History

Posted: Updated:

The Watford City Centennial Celebration was this past weekend. Many people came out to learn the history of the city and to enjoy the festivities.

The city was established in 1914 and received its name from Doctor Von Morris who was the first doctor in McKenzie County. He named the town after his hometown of Watford, Ontario. The word city was added to the name later.

“There's another community in North Dakota up between Minot and Devils Lake by it called Wolford.” says Watford City resident Sylvia Leiseth. "The male in the freight kept getting confused between Watford and Wolford, and in 1915 the word city was added to it."

The incorporation date of the city is January 1915, so the celebration is actually a kickoff to the centennial year. The preparation for the event took two years to plan and a lot of help from everybody in the community.

“We're working with people that we knew wanted to have the best exposure possible. We wanted to let people know through the centennial that Watford City is a great place, and it's family friendly," says centennial chairwoman Patsy Levang.

Watford City celebrated 100 years at the weekend's centennial.
