96th Annual Veterans Convention Held in Minot

Posted: Updated:
There are about 56 thousand Veterans in North Dakota, many of which are members of the American Legion. This weekend in Minot, the organization held their 96th annual convention.

Legion members from across the state made a trip to the Magic City to discuss changes and issues facing American Veterans. Newly elected district commander reviewed their responsibilities, and the group went over their yearly programs. Across the nation there are about 2.3 million members, all of which are now dealing with the controversy in the Veterans Affairs Department.

"Now we have a report that we've probably lost a thousand veterans because of inadequate medical care that they've gotten," says Nat. Vice Commander for Midwest Region, Wayne Satrom. "This is something huge. These veterans have gone out and risked their lives for the United States, so there's no reason we shouldn't be there behind them."

"Shinseki has lost his job and someone else is in a position of leadership now, but what I'm hoping is that isn't so called satisfaction on everybody's part," says Legion District Commander, Eugene Kachena. "He was not the creator of the problem. The buck stopped on his desk, but now we need to find out why these things are happening."

The American Legion convention continues tomorrow at the Grand Hotel. Veterans who want information on joining the Legion should head to the convention or log onto their website at www.NDLegion.org
