Summer Trio Gives Back to the Community

Posted: Updated:

Raising more than $300 in less than four hours, sounds almost impossible for a few young girls. Especially if the only things they're selling are cookies and Kool-Aid.

Three young ladies accomplished that last week, and then gave all their profits to charity. They gave it all away! These three girls formed a non-profit, Summer Trio, dedicated to helping organizations in need.

Summer Trio was established six weeks ago, and the girls say they've been having a blast .

Elise Keller, Kate Kesler and Kaia Weise each have their own desks and titles.

Keller is the secretary and treasurer. Her jobs are to plan events and count the cash, among other things.

"I'd say we're like a non-profit thing because we donate," says Keller.

Kelser is president, and her style is democratic over dictator. She says she got the idea to form the Summer Trio from reading books about club houses and kids having fun secret groups outside of school.

Weise is the vice-president. She helps come up with ideas and also runs some of the meetings.

Summer Trio is about giving to those who need it most. Their first major fundraiser was just cookies and Kool-Aid, and the turn out was a $300 surprise

"It feels really good, because I thought we're gonna make like maybe 60. But , I just really want to thank the people because some people paid 20 dollars and they only got like one cookie. So they really helped us," says Kesler.

But why not keep it? No one can legally get a job.

"That'd be selfish to give like 100 to each, instead of just giving it to those that are in need, like animals that don't have food, that were just abandoned," says Weise.

The girls beamed presenting their check to the Central Dakota Human Society.

"The first I heard of it was today. That they had raised this amount of money in that amount of time. I can't hardly believe it.  I think they should move their act downtown to main street in Mandan during the fourth. Then we'll be talking," says Sue Buchholz of the Human Society.

The girls say they're happy to help.

Summer Trio's next fundraiser is going to be a cancer walk. I'll keep you updated on the details.
