Basin Electric Unveils Float

Posted: Updated:
The Mandan Independence Day Parade is a part of many people's celebrations and it is only a week away.

Next Friday, Main Street will lined buzzing with excitement.

"I believe it's the largest parade in the state. It's been going on for 130-some years. So, it's been a huge success in Mandan. And we're expecting this to be one of our largest parades or the largest parade that we've had on record," says Parade co-chair Risa Bergquist.

Today, employees at Basin Electric got a sneak peek of what Touchstone Energy Cooperatives will contribute to the event.

The float and three larger-than-life puppets were made entirely by volunteers.

"It's based on a popular theme of, 'Keep Calm.' So, we wanted to highlight our cooperative principles and our cooperative spirit. So, we said to 'Keep Calm and Co-op On," says  volunteer Tracey Kruse.

Employees and their families enjoyed rootbeer floats. And some special visitors dropped by to take pictures with the kids.

"I couldn't believe my eyes," says Emma Olson.

"I gave Pluto a hug. And then, the giant blue dude, I gave him a high five," says Aubrey Roemmich.

Mickey, Minnie, Daisy and Donald were among the Disney characters who made an appearance.

They'll also be a part of the Mandan Independence Day Parade and street festival.

"This year, we're not doing a world's largest chicken dance or anything like that. We decided instead to have the Disney characters. We also have a couple of DJs and a balloon artist. There's going to be a couple of musicians," says Bergquist.

Other Disney characters appearing in the parade and at the street festival include Belle, Ariel and Jasmine.

The parade kicks off at 10:40 in the morning on Friday, July 4.
