McQuade has Bismarck Businesses Booming

Posted: Updated:
The last weekend in June is always like Black Friday for many Bismarck Mandan businesses. It's time for annual Sam McQuade Senior charity softball tournament, and about 450 teams are participating.

Many of the players and spectators come from out of town to see the games. They fill around 2,000 hotel rooms, but hotels aren't the only places that will be busy.

The McQuade rush started this morning at Dominos pizza. And Jeremy Gallagher it will only get busier as the weekend continues.

"This morning, since we opened, we've been going non-stop all day," says manager Gallagher.

Keeping the the cheese, peppers and pepperoni tubs full is the easy. Delivering pizza to softball fields, parking lots and hotel rooms can be a lot more difficult.

"They call and tell us to meet them in the parking lot.  I was carrying ten pizzas at a time," says Gallagher.

But he says tracking down customers that don't have an address is worth the time and effort. He once received a $25 for tracking down a hungry team.

Sit down restaurants will also be hopping, Carlynn Schleuter has worked for the Ground Round for the last 7 years and says this weekend is always exciting.

"It's kind of a rush. I mean you can never tell when we are going to get busy because this tournament is so sporadic and spread out, but you can have a lot one minute and a twenty minute gap the next minute," says Schleuter.

She says after a long day on the diamonds players and fans are thirsty.

"Definitely beer drinkers. Softball players and beer drinking go hand in hand so we're happy to have the business, I mean we're right in the middle of all the action," says Schleuter.

Not long after the final strike is called, organizers will begin planning for the 2015 McQuade games.

"When Monday morning rolls around after the tournaments are over, we always go through things that happened and discuss what we can do better," says Mike Wolf the tournament co-director

The only thing that could dampen the tournaments enthusiasm are storm clouds, but on the bright side the tournament has only been rained out once in its 39 year history.
