Firework Stands Open for Business

Posted: Updated:
It's the first day of business for firework stands in 2014, and some say they expect business to skyrocket, but with only nine days to clear the shelves, dealers say every minute counts.

Robert Heringer says he's been in the business of boom for 50 years. The owner of Bob's Fireworks City says he opened at 7 a.m. Friday, but admitted to opening at midnight on the first day of the selling period in previous years. He also says he's expecting some long days in the tight time frame.

"We don't close until the last person leaves which might be 3 in the morning. Tonight, I'm assuming it's going to be way late, it's the first night and it's a Friday night," says Heringer.

Heringer is expecting sales to be especially high this year since two weekends fall in the nine day selling period. And Brandon Bailey is one customer who started the day off with a bang, buying $2,700 worth of fireworks for the fourth.

"It's one of the most awesome holidays and not only  what it represents, it's cool that fireworks are involved with that holiday because they're just so much fun," says Bailey.

But in this booming business, competition is stiff and sometimes side-by-side.

"I enjoy having competition close by, and I think it also helps their business too, because our customers have the advantage of walking back and forth to competitors," says Heringer.

Firework dealers aren't the only ones working overtime. Mandan Firefighters say they are gearing up for a busy week.

"On average both medical calls and fire calls average three or four a day, but over the 4th I would say we get anywhere from 10 to 15 a day, mainly fire," says Matt Hennessy a Bismarck fire fighter.

Hennessy says it is important to always have a hose, a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher around if you plan on lighting off fireworks.  Fireworks are prohibited within the Bismarck city limits. For more information on the fireworks penalties visit
