Young Entrepreneurs Camp Begins

Posted: Updated:
The North Dakota Entrepreneur Program started its 2014 camp this week in Williston. Some participants have been involved for a couple years and others are doing it for the first time.

The Young Entrepreneurs all walked into their lunch meeting today to talk some business. They all sat down and had conversations about their new city.

“We started with our first summer camp at UND in 2006 as an experiment pilot. And it proved to be successful. And had three of the camps in 2007. And this summer I had nine weeks of this kind of summer camp," says Barry Striegel the director of the N.D. Entrepreneur Program.

The 2014, camp started earlier this week where Mayor Howard Klug came to talk to all the participants. Then, they had to decide on a name for their city, which they decided on Thneed-Ville.

“It's like the real world,” says second-grader Makenzie Krenz. “I like the idea of being able to trade money for things that I want, but I'm not giving away the real money.”

“We start out with just meetings and all that boring stuff. Getting the town done, but the first pay day comes when you get to buy all the stuff. I really like business. There's lots of business because then you get lots of money," says participant Haden Bergstrom.

“We actually do our own business with no help,” says participant Katelyn Ragsdale. “We have a lot of business because we change up each and every day.

After deciding on the city name, the entrepreneurs decided on which businesses they would open and some really put some thought into it.

“We did a craft stand,” says sixth-grader Skyler Bergstrom. “Where you can buy melted down beads made in cupcake tins, and they're like these circular little bead things. They're really cool.”

“This year, I'm doing mainly snow cones," says eighth grader Jeremiah Jaramillo.

Striegel added there could be the possibility of a statewide conference for the entrepreneurs in future, but there are no immediate plans yet.
