Fire Department Tests Hydrants

Posted: Updated:

Starting next week, Magic City residents will see the Minot Fire Department out on the streets testing fire hydrants.

Most hydrants don't get used on a regular basis, so the testing will allow the fire department to identify the hydrants that aren't working correctly. The goal of the quality testing is to ultimately save valuable time when responding to a fire.

“The city's fire department operates off hydrants. We don't carry a lot of water on our trucks, and we don't have tankers. So, we can't provide fire protection without fire hydrants,” says Fire Chief CJ Craven.

Minot residents need to remember that when fire hydrants are flowed, iron deposits in the water lines get stirred up. This can cause the water to have a brownish color in the surrounding area. It's only temporary, and the water is safe to drink and cook with, but the public should avoid doing laundry during that time.
