Truck Driver Heads to National Competition

Posted: Updated:
A Bismarck man is heading to Pittsburgh to put his driving skills to the test, and he could bring home a big prize.

"Well, I pulled out of Pittsburgh rolling down that eastern seaboard."

Jason Harrington is hitting the road."I've got my diesel wound up and she's running like never before," says Harrington.

"This will be my third year going to nationals. Two years ago would have been my first time. I went to Minneapolis, and that was my first experience with it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I took eighth in the nation doing that my first year. Then, last year, I went to nationals, and that was in Salt Lake City, and I actually took third place in the nation."

Harrington placed first in the Twin Trailers class of the North Dakota State Truck Driving Championships for the last three years. And once again, he'll represent the state at the national competition. For the last seven years, he's worked for Conway Freight. And he's rolling towards one million miles, accident free.

"I think he does have the skills, and he has the knowledge. There's a really good chance he could bring home a trophy, and hopefully get some recognition nationally," says Matthew Rydberg of Conway Freight.

Harrington says he looks forward to competition season every year.

"You get together with a group of drivers who really enjoy what they're doing. They're trying to be the best that they can be. So, that part, the group of people you're around is a lot of fun," says Harrington.

"My kids come. They'll put Conway-colored beads on, and they'll wear a Conway hat or whatever. And they kind of just cheer you on."

Truckers will take a written test, compete in a series of obstacles and a perform a vehicle inspection. But, more importantly, they can't be involved in any accidents in the year leading up to the competition. And if Harrington wins, he'll bring home a big prize.

"If I win, with Conway Freight, they buys us a Ford vehicle of our choice."Harrington says he'd probably get a pickup, and until then, he'll keep trucking along.

Administrators say construction for Legacy High School is on schedule and should be completed next fall, in 2015. Juniors, Sophomores and Freshman will call Legacy their school home.
