Protect Yourself this Season from Ticks

Posted: Updated:

Summer means spending more time outdoors. Whether you're walking a trail, having a picnic or enjoying a pick-up game of sports, the one thing you'll want to avoid is a tick bite.

These warmer months are when ticks are most active. The best ways to prevent tick bites are by using insect repellent, avoiding wooded and bushy areas with high grass and leaf litter and walking in the center of trails. If you do happen to notice a tick on your body, don't pull it off quickly or crush it.

Dr. Casmiar Nwaigwe, an Infectious Disease specialist at Trinity Health, suggests using a thick paper towel to pull ticks off steadily. That way, you can remove it as a whole. If the tick is crushed while you pull it off it may actually lead to transmission of infection.

Dr. Nwaigwe says that a tick has to be attached to your body for more than a day to transmit a disease.
