Rodeo Royalty Visits Local Schools

Posted: Updated:
Camp Edventure students at Sunrise Elementary in Bismarck met with royalty this morning. Miss Rodeo Mandan Queen and Miss Rodeo Mandan Princess talked to the children about how much fun rodeos are. They also taught them how to lasso cattle and the basics of barrel racing.

Although rodeos are common in North Dakota, many kids hadn't been to one. So, the hands-on introduction to some rodeo basics seemed to go over well. Reviews were mixed from the more than 50 Camp Ed students who got to hear about rodeos and learn how to rope a cow.

"Cattle roping was fun because you gotta rope cattle," says Camp Edverturer Alexis Schantz.

"It was pretty fun, but it's kinda hard too, because you have to know your directions left or right," says Camp Edventurer David Larson.

For some, that was enough to make them aspire to becoming rodeo royalty like Miss Rodeo Mandan Danielle Taylor and Miss Rodeo Mandan Princess Brianna Horner. But not everyone did.

"It kinda looks like it's a whole bunch of work, to get up there. I think it'd be very hard," says Larson.

The ladies agreed, winning the titles and being where they are today, took hard work, that all started last year. Touring schools in the Bismarck-Mandan area, they told the students it's worth it because the rodeo is part of North Dakota culture.

"I grew up doing rodeo. I made most of my friends through rodeo. So, to promote the sport that gave me so much is just a really good feeling," says Taylor.

"My favorite thing about this is the little kids. And it's how they look up to me. And barrel racing is one of my favorites because  my horse and I get along so well doing it," says Horner.

Although the horses and cattle the children practiced on weren't real, both ladies agreed that the smiles on the children's faces were.

Mandan's Rodeo Royalty will be touring several other schools in Bismarck and Mandan for the rest of the week, talking to children about the rodeo and possibly trying to get them excited for the Mandan Rodeo starting the first week of July.
