Alexander Receives Water Project Grant

Posted: Updated:

The State Land Board rewarded grants to most of the cities on the western part of the state. The city of Alexander was given a $1 million for a water supply improvement project.

Alexander is a small community, but it deals with new problems every day. One of the main ones is its water situation.

“The RO plant, I believe was put in six years ago maybe more. We don't have a whole lot of money, so in order to upkeep it, it stretches your pocket book a little," says Alexander Mayor Jerry Hatter.

As many as five different cities received money to help out their water situation. Ross and Arnegard will both receive a million to expand or improve their wastewater systems.

Alexander is dealing with similar problems than the rest of the cities in Bakken, which is expansion because of the oil boom. Currently, there are about 1,100 residents. It has two wells that could cycle water for about 1,400 people, but it probably can't handle more than that.

“We have really developed on the south side, so we're going to loop some lines in town from our existing water plant to the south side," says Hatter.

The new developments will be built near the lagoon. The lagoon is where the town waste water goes, and it is filtered through three bodies of water. Once it reaches the final body of water, the city tests it so it can be reused.

“This town continues to grow, and they need the funding from the state to continue to expand their water and sewer lagoons” says Mark Spader of Alexander.

Hatter says the RO plant will also be improved. There will be more pumps inside and better equipment installed to help the situation.

The project will create a water system for 3,000 people.
