Dan's Garden: June 20

Posted: Updated:
Nothing says summer like a garden full of blooming flowers.

It's the middle of June, and things are really starting to look good. There is still some varieties of trees that are slow to leaf up because of the long tough winter that we had, but I call this time of year the days of vines and roses because vines are looking good now, and roses are blooming like crazy.

I like the hardy shrub roses from Canada because you don't even have to cover them over the winter, and they're hardly any work at all. There's a new line of roses called easy elegances, and they are easy to grow. Also, they never have to be sprayed for diseases.  If you go online to buy them, you can get a two-year guarantee, which is unheard off with roses really.

And of course there's other hiberties and florabundas. Carefree Sunshine, there's a lot of carefree beauty, pink, red, yellow. They're very easy too.
Clamatis and vines are popular. These die back to the ground, so every year they come back up, but they're very popular because they come in different colors.

There's many other kinds of vine like the honeysuckle vine which is very easy to grow. They'll get about eight feet high the first year, and they come in yellow or orange. There's ivy like Anglemans Ivy, and Boston Ivy, and of course my favorite is grapes because they have big leaves, they look lush and luxuriant, and you get grapes too. You can make wine or jelly or juice.

So, there's a lot of things now, and until next week, good gardening.  Pull those weeds.
