Tech Talk: Summer Smartphone Accessories

Posted: Updated:
Tomorrow is the first day of summer, but people are already heading outdoors to celebrate the warm weather.

Many people like to listen to music when they're enjoying the outdoors. Portable speakers are more popular than ever, but some people are afraid to take them near the water.

"I generally don't bring things out here, because I don't want it to get wrecked," says Tyler Larson.

But this speaker is an exception to that rule.

"This speaker is our first waterproof portable speaker. You can connect to it with bluetooth. It also acts as a portable charger. So, at the same time you're listening to music, if the battery on your phone starts to die, you can plug it in to the speaker as well," says Verizon Wireless Manager Nicolle Binstock.

The Altec Lansing Lifejacket speaker pairs with Android, Apple and Blackberry devices. And phone cases, like this one from Lifeproof, can even waterproof your phone.

When paired with a smart device, the speaker can play music and work as a speaker phone, even when it's in the water.

"In the summers, we get what, three good months a year? So, with a waterproof speaker, you can take it with you anywhere. Most people like to spend their summers at the lake, by the river, working in the yard. With this, you don't have to worry about it getting wet," says Binstock.

Larson says it seems like a good investment.

"If you want to literally play out in the water and listen to music at the same time, it would be pretty sweet. You don't have to worry about getting water on it and wrecking the speaker," says Larson.

The speaker sells for $150 and can be found online or at Verizon Wireless stores.

The speaker lasts up to 16 hours before it needs to be recharged.
