Senators React to President's Decision on Iraq

Posted: Updated:
U.S. troops will not be heading back to Iraq for combat in the country. President Barack Obama made the announcement at a special press conference this afternoon.

As tensions continue to grow in Iraq, the president wants to make one thing clear.

"American forces will not be returning to combat in Iraq," says Obama.

North Dakota's congressional delegation agrees, and Sen. John Hoeven added that we do need to make sure the Iraqi government has a plan to move forward.

"And there's serious questions whether Maliki can be part of it because you've got a Sunni Shia war going on, and he's in essence removed all the sunni's from the government and the military, which is a significant part of the problem. We've got to make sure that they have a plan and that the government is responsible in terms of making sure that they can govern that country," says Hoeven.

To help with that support the president is sending up to 300 military advisors into the country.

"We're prepared to create joint operation centers in Baghdad and northern Iraq to share intelligence and coordinate planning to confront the terrorist threat of ISIL," says Obama.

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp released a statement saying she hopes we can help protect the area and bring stability, but it is time for Iraq to run their own government.

Obama also added that we are working to secure our embassy in Iraq.
