Bill May Remove Social Security Tax

Posted: Updated:

The Democratic candidate for tax commissioner says he wants the Legislature to pass a bill to get rid of a tax on social security.

Jason Astrup says North Dakota is one of only 13 states that currently taxes social security benefits received.

He says it would cost the state $12 million to offer the tax exclusion, and he proposes that money be taken out of the states general fund balance.

"It's a pretty cheap price to pay to help our retirees out and when you're on a fixed income, every dollar counts. Ending the tax is not a question of means it's more a question of priorities," says Tax Commisioner candidate Jason Astrup.

The general fund had $1.4 billion left in the general fund after the last session.
