Oil Production Reaches One Million Barrels

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota has joined an elite club, in terms of their oil production. Only three other states can boast a level of oil production above one million barrels each day.

It's a milestone months in the making, as the state reached the one million barrels of oil produced per day mark in April.

The state expected to reach this milestone sometime last year, but the industry suffered delays from this past winter's harsh conditions.

And April's production was hindered by several days of heavy rain and wind, so the numbers will only continue to grow according to the director for the Department of Mineral Resources.

"The big surge in production has not yet happened as of the end of April. We had a 20,000 or 23,000 barrels per day increase, but there are larger increases to come as we move in to May, which had much better weather and the current month June which has been beautiful," says Director Lynn Helms.

The numbers for natural gas flared was still fairly high in April, as the Hess Tioga Gas Plant continued to add capacity. Helms says he expects the amount to reduce with the plant coming fully online after April, and also in the coming months as permits require gas capture plans when companies file for a drilling permit.
