Department of Health Reports Spill Near Marmath

Two thousand barrels of water used for enhanced oil recovery spilled near the city of Marmath.

The North Dakota Department of Health says it was caused by a break in the machine's line and that's as not as bad for the environment as it could have been. 

"The source water is water that is used in enhanced oil recovery. It's water that's pumped from the ground and back down into the formation where the oil is and then it comes back up with the oil. This is different than the produced water that is brought up with oil when it is brought to the surface. It's not as salty, so therefore it has less of an environmental impact," says Karl Rockeman of the department.

The spill has been contained and is under investigation.
