FAA Awards Bismarck Airport

Posted: Updated:

The Bismarck Airport has received almost $2 million in federal funding. The grant funds will be used to repair the main runway.

One pilot says repairs to the Bismarck airport runway are overdue.

"Bismarck has had a lot of increase in traffic over the last few years. And so, the runway's kind of taken a beating. So, I think it's time for a little bit of a fix up," says pilot Micah Doebler.

Airport manager Greg Haug agrees.

"We've got some paving seams that are giving us some trouble. We're having to do some patching and repairing out there," says Bismarck Airport Manager Greg Haug.

Haug says a bump on the runway is far more dangerous than a bump in the road. That's why they're resurfacing the runway. He says some of the asphalt dates back to the 1950s, and it's time to consider reconstruction.

"So, this will buy us some time. Over the course of the next three to five years, we hope to potentially go out and reconstruct the entire runway itself," says Haug.

The project will begin in mid-September and will take 10 to 12 days to complete.

During that time, a smaller runway will be used to accommodate airport traffic. Due to the runway construction, Allegiant Airlines will not offer three regularly scheduled Las Vegas flights in September.

Haug says certain aircrafts require a longer runway than the one that will available during the construction.
