Make-A-Wish Sends North Dakota Family to Alaska

Posted: Updated:
A group of hummers from Minot Air Force Base pulled in to Minot's Roosevelt Park Zoo this weekend.

But it was being led by a 16-year-old boy.

The base joined North Dakota's Make-A-Wish chapter in putting on a wish reveal for Nathan Artz Saturday.

Throughout the day Nathan got to play detective, collecting clues at various businesses around the Magic City.

"We got picked up in cars, we went to the Scandinavian park," Nathan said. "As a child we went there a lot."

Nathan was then made commander of the convoy that was headed to the zoo.

"He directed that convoy all the way through the city of Minot and I think, exponential, he was just great at it," said Clint Ericson, a Master Sergeant at Minot Air Force Base and a Make-A-Wish volunteer. "From what I heard, he was one of the best convoy commanders they had," he added.

Upon arrival at the zoo, Nathan found out that he and his family were headed to Alaska.

"Can't put it into words," said Nathan's father Robert Artz.

"Yeah, today when I saw all these people coordinating this, and I thought, they gave their Saturday up, and we're all short of time," said Nathan's mother Brenda Artz. "But to have that much caring, it is, it is powerful," she added.

Since November 2012 Nathan has been receiving routine chemotherapy and radiation treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of muscle cancer. His parents see the trip as invaluable time away from it all for the family.

"It's priceless. Can't put it into words," said Robert.

"It's just overwhelming," added Brenda.

Nathan and his family head off on their adventure to Alaska on June 25.
