Optimist Park Celebrates Flag Day

Posted: Updated:
The Fourth of July is celebrated as America's birthday, but today is dedicated to celebrating our nation's greatest symbol, the flag.

To commemorate Congress's adoption of the Star Spangled Banner, people in Bismarck gathered at Optimist Park for a special celebration. The Bismarck Optimist club and The AMVETS Community Honor Guard conducted the ceremony to replace the current American flag and raise a new state flag.

Earlier in the day, the Avenue of Flags was installed along State St. Organizers say the day was used to celebrate not only the flag, but those who served to protect it.

"I really just think the honor that we give a lot of our club members are veterans and really take pride in that, and as Americans we just truly respect everything that they've done for us," says Bismarck Optimist Club President Tonya Holmstrom. "Being a part of this ceremony is wonderful. Optimist park is wonderful. It's a great place for kids to come."

The public was invited to bring their faded and worn flags for proper disposal at a later date.
