Residents Express Unhappiness With Presidential Visit

Posted: Updated:
Another group was planning a protest today, and they planned on doing  it right here in Bismarck. They say the president should also be addressing other issues impacting North Dakota.

Marty Beard says being able to buy and own firearms is an important part of the North Dakotan and American lifestyle. He says he thinks President Obama should have been willing to discuss Second Amendment rights along with other important issues during his visit.

"It's real easy to come in and not have to listen to anybody that's against you," says NRA member Marty Beard.

The coal and oil industries, border issues and the farm bill regulations are just a few topics Jamie Brecht says the president should be discussing.

"I don't think it's great that he's coming here to be honest with you, especially since he won't talk about a lot of the issues people in North Dakota are concerned with," says Bismarck resident Jamie Brecht.

Brecht says although the president's visit is focused on Native American Policy, he doesn't think it is right the audience selection was so restrictive.

"He has a lot of support on the reservations, he would get some questions he wouldn't like around here," says Brecht.

Only about 1,000 Native Americans with White House tickets were allowed into today's Flag Day Ceremony featuring President Obama and the first lady.

The President was on the ground in North Dakota for only a few hours, but his presence will be debated and celebrated for quite awhile.
