Cannon Ball Makes Presidential Preparations

Posted: Updated:

In less than 24 hours, the town of Cannon Ball will be under high security as the president makes his way to the Standing Rock Reservation.

The normally small community has had to make some changes to be able to accommodate such a high profile visitor.

It might look like this crew is just cleaning up yet another field. But they are actually getting it in top condition for a presidential landing.

"We're preparing the airfield for the presidential aircade I guess you could call it. Right now we're just making sure all the debris is off the landing area so nothing gets sucked into their turbines and stuff like that," says event volunteer Don McLaughlin.

It took an entire week to transform this empty field into a presidential loading zone.

"Their personnel, this is the place that they've selected. So, we're just trying to make it as nice as we could," says volunteer Sean Whitemountain.

In the days leading up to Mr. Obama's visit the crew has even put on a mock landing, just to make sure everything is ready.

"They all came, they were pretty cool helicopters. I thought it was really nice, we had a lot of police here too and just made sure everything ran smoothly," says volunteer Chelsea Howard.

But despite all the extra work preparing for his visit and all the extra security and traffic around the reservation, Howard says the community is honored to host him."

"It means a lot because you know Standing Rock is such a small reservation and it's weird because the President is actually coming to North Dakota. One of the President's I really look up to," says Howard.

Most of the work is being done by volunteers and Whitemountain says it wasn't hard to find the help.

"The majority of us are taking time out of our day and they asked fire management to assist so we're more than happy to help out," says Whitemountain.

All with the hope of making the visit a pleasant one for President Obama.

White House officials have also been in Standing Rock making sure everything is set for tomorrow's visit.
