Richland County Centennial Kicks Off

Posted: Updated:
The Richland County Centennial celebration will start tomorrow and end with some cake and balloons on Sunday. Today, was the first day of preparation.

A hundred years ago, Richland County became its own after it was separated from Dawson County. Many community members wanted to commemorate that time so they planned a big celebration at the county fairgrounds.

“Most of the committee members are volunteers and so at this time there are nine of us,” says Centennial Committee Chairman Jamie Larson.“We've been through all of it together for the last two years. It's been fun. You know like planning any event. If anybody's ever planned a fair same type of thing. It just takes time to plan something like this.”

This area will be filled with vendors this weekend. Many haven't started cleaning their booths yet, but one has. The owners of Burley's Kettle Corn has owned this space for three years and decided to join the celebration.

“Just wanted to be a part of it. A 100 years is pretty big deal. It's going to be pretty exciting," says Allison Berka of Burley's Kettle Corn.

Just like some of the vendors, everybody is in full on prep mode for this weekend.

People from the county came out to the fairgrounds early to start setting up tables. One area will have bouncy castles for the children, but there will also be other things for everybody else.

“I think just meeting with the people that are going to be here is going to be exciting. I understand all the motels are full, so people are coming. I'm thinking that there's going to be a lot of family members that are going to have a family reunion. It's an opportunity for friends to meet friends," says Richland Commissioner Duane Mitchell.

“I think people are excited," says Larson. “There's a lot of people that know about it. We've done a ton of advertising. I've heard a lot of people excited about the free concerts so again that is what we're here to do. We're here to entertain people and wish Richland County a happy birthday.”

Larson added the free concerts will feature Rob Quist, Great Northern and Sawyer Brown.
