Sleepy Hollow Offers Art Classes

Posted: Updated:
Creativity is running rampant at Bismarck High School says instructors from Sleepy Hollow Theater and Arts Park. More than 60 classes on performance and visual arts are being offered to children throughout the month of June.

Children ranging from four to 18 are invited to week long classes that are only an hour. The coordinator says it's enough to keep them entertained while learning something new.

This is Jasmine Trottier's first year at Sleepy Hollow's art classes.

"Pretty much I'm having fun with it. Me and my sister are just messing around with it. We keep giving each other ideas for what to do," says Trottier.

She and her sister are enrolled in a couple of classes this week. She says glass etching is one of their favorites and last week it was the Geisha classes.

"This is the time we need to be creative. You need to let that right side of your brain go crazy with imagination. It'll help them actually in the fall," says class coordinator Keri Hess-Bolte.

Hess-Bolte says it's best not to let your child's brain turn to mush, and these classes can help. The classes challenge the children to use their imagination and grow in different aspects of the arts in ways they may not get in school.

One parent, who's been coming to the camp for close to 20 years, couldn't agree more. Having brought her daughter, now 21, to the arts classes since she was six.

"I will bring her every summer. Now, I'm bringing my kids, another three kids. I have one, he's four, and six and one that is eight. I also brought them last summer, this summer, for sure every summer," says Lina Petrus-Bender a mom to one of the campers.

"You'll enjoy yourself. The art is really fun and so are the designs. It's kind of cool," says Trottier.

To include family in their learning, children almost always have something to take home with them. Some classes have recitals or closing ceremonies to show families what they've been working on all week.

There's still time to register a child for any of the weekly classes. For more information on the classes and times visit Sleepy Hollow Theater & Arts Park website at http://www.shst.org/ or call 701-400-250.
