Program Keeps Residents Cool

Posted: Updated:
Summertime brings high heat and plenty of humidity, two conditions that can be life threatening for some, but North Dakota's cooling assistance program is here to help.

The program is designed to offer up some assistance to those who have medical conditions like asthma, diabetes or cancer, and who also have a hard time affording those sky-high A/C bills during the summer months.

"Under this program, if they have a medical need, they can receive a cooling device. It could be an air conditioner, it could be repairing an air conditioner or it could be a fan if that would do the trick," says Carol Cartledge of the Department of Human Services.

To qualify for the program, energy assistance clients need a signed statement from a healthcare worker that verifies their medical condition. They must provide that information to the county social service office.
